hello,
You can update the material type setting (or create new one) which can be maintained on quantity basis but not valuated basis, so when GR is done refers to PO, the quantity of the material increases but does not increase the material value (instead it will increase the asset that defined in PO account assignment).

you can configure the material type with spro t-code menu:
Logistics General - Material Master - Basic Settings - Material Types - Define Attribute of Material Type

- select the material type used for the spareparts
- double click "quantity/value updating" on the menu tree on the left
- tick "quantity updating" field for each plant that will use the material
- do not tick "value updating" field (if ticked, we can't post to asset)
- save.

you can register at our "SAP Study Materials" group on LinkedIn for more discussion at http://www.linkedin.com/groupRegistration?gid=2139423

When an asset is received is there a way maintain visibility? My company orders and receives items (often spares) designated as asset, but might not place them in service for a number of months, or even years, though from a financial standpoint depreciation is being taken. Since they are not shown on inventory, the only knowledge of their whereabouts lies within the minds of those responsible and hopefully a manual record. We have a dynamic workforce and attrition can mean loss of information. What can be done within SAP to provide materials management visibility of these "assets in waiting" while maintaining financial's ability to depreciate?
